Grand Rapids, MN (September 22, 2024) – A motorcycle accident occurred on September 21, 2024, at approximately 3:30 PM at the intersection of Northbound Highway 169 and Highway 2 in Grand Rapids Township, Itasca County. The incident resulted in injuries, prompting a response from emergency services and local law enforcement.

According to preliminary reports, a 2003 Chevy Silverado pickup truck was traveling southbound on US Highway 169 when the driver initiated a left turn across the northbound traffic. As the Chevy entered the oncoming left lane, the driver, Lane Francis Weitzel, noticed a Honda motorcycle approaching and stopped in the lane of traffic in an attempt to avoid a collision. Despite this effort, the northbound Honda motorcycle, operated by 66-year-old Thomas Allen Makinen, crashed into the Chevy pickup that had halted in its path.

Emergency responders from Itasca County arrived at the scene to provide assistance. Thomas Makinen sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Grand Itasca Health Network for medical treatment. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and reports indicate that alcohol was not a factor in his case.

The driver of the Chevy, Lane Weitzel, did not suffer any injuries in the crash. He was wearing his seatbelt, but it was noted that alcohol was involved in his case. The pickup also had passengers, Soshanna Marie Smith and Leslie Scott Weitzel, both of whom were unharmed.
