Tulsa, OK (September 18, 2024) – A fatal crash at the intersection of 71st St and Yale Ave on Tuesday, September 17, resulted in one death and left another person hospitalized. Tulsa Police reported that 28-year-old Nicholas Stewart, the driver of a white Honda Accord, ran a red light and caused a collision with a maroon Kia Optima, which was entering the intersection on a green light. The impact of the crash pushed Stewart’s vehicle into the median, where two pedestrians were standing.
These individuals, soliciting donations for a local organization, were both struck by the Honda. One of the pedestrians died at the scene, while the other sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Stewart was arrested for negligent homicide and is being held in the Tulsa County Jail. As a tribal member, his case will be handled under the McGirt ruling, which could place the prosecution in Tribal or Federal court.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances of the crash.
