Pawleys Island, SC (September 17, 2024) – A serious accident occurred over the weekend that resulted in a South Carolina State Trooper being hospitalized. The incident took place early Sunday morning on Highway 17 near Hagley Drive, prompting a response from deputies of the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the incident report obtained by WMBF News, a deputy arrived at the scene to find a South Carolina Highway Patrol vehicle overturned on the right shoulder of the highway. A 2020 Chevrolet Equinox was also located in the median with “severe debilitating damage.”
The deputy spoke with the driver of the Chevrolet, who fortunately did not sustain any injuries. The driver reported that they were attempting to turn left into Pawley’s Plantation when they noticed the marked patrol unit approaching with emergency lights and sirens activated. However, the driver stated they did not realize how close the patrol vehicle was at the time. Additionally, the driver mentioned that the patrol vehicle appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed.
A witness corroborated this account, according to the report.
The trooper involved in the incident had already been transported to a hospital after being trapped in their vehicle but managed to extricate themselves. The incident report further detailed that dashcam footage captured the patrol vehicle traveling down the highway with its lights and sirens on when the Chevrolet made the left turn onto Pawleys Plantation Way, inadvertently stopping in the roadway and blocking northbound traffic on US 17.
The video evidence indicated that the patrol vehicle attempted to maneuver into another lane to avoid the collision but then corrected back when the Chevrolet was observed obstructing the road, leading to the crash. The patrol vehicle ultimately spun onto the shoulder of the highway before overturning.
Following the accident, the driver of the Chevrolet was cited for failure to yield the right of way. An update regarding the condition of the trooper involved has not yet been provided.
Our thoughts are with the injured trooper and their family during this challenging time.
Police Accidents in South Carolina
Police accidents are a significant concern in South Carolina, often involving high-speed pursuits or emergency responses that can lead to tragic outcomes. These incidents not only affect the officers involved but also pose risks to civilians on the road.
When a police vehicle is responding to an emergency, it is crucial for other drivers to be aware of their surroundings and yield the right of way to ensure safety for all. Unfortunately, accidents can still occur, resulting in injuries or fatalities.
In South Carolina, drivers are required to yield to emergency vehicles that are displaying lights and sirens. Failure to do so can result in serious consequences, including citations and liability for damages caused in an accident.
When involved in an accident with a police vehicle, it is essential for all parties to seek legal guidance to understand their rights and responsibilities. Legal representation can help navigate the complexities of such cases, especially when determining fault and liability.
If you or someone you know has been involved in an accident with a police vehicle, it is vital to document the incident thoroughly, gather witness statements, and consult with a personal injury attorney to discuss potential claims and legal options.
