Knox County, KY (September 17, 2024) – A Knox County Public School bus was involved in a serious accident on Monday afternoon at approximately 3:35 PM. The crash occurred at the intersection of KY Highway 1232 and Indian Oaks Drive in Corbin while the bus was transporting 35 students from Lynn Camp Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, along with a bus monitor.
Reports indicate that the school bus was struck by an SUV, resulting in the bus being nose-first over the roadway embankment and landing in a deep ditch. The only emergency evacuation option available for the students was through the rear of the bus.
Two children and the bus monitor sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to Baptist Health in Corbin for medical evaluation. Fortunately, the other passengers on the bus were reported to be safe.
During the investigation, deputies discovered that the SUV was traveling down the hill on Indian Oaks Drive when the brakes failed, preventing the driver from stopping at the intersection of KY 1232. The SUV, which was occupied by a male driver and his three-year-old son, overturned in an embankment as a result of the collision. The child was transported to Baptist Health in Corbin with non-life-threatening injuries. Thankfully, the child was secured in a safety seat and did not suffer serious injuries.
The Kentucky State Police (KSP), Knox County Ambulance Service, and the West Knox Fire Department assisted at the scene to ensure the safety of all individuals involved and to manage the aftermath of the accident.
Our thoughts are with the students, their families, and the bus monitor during this challenging time.
